What is Diabetes ?

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your the body’s is unable to manage blood glucose, otherwise known as blood sugar. The following video, explains what is diabetes, the types of diabetes, common symptoms of the disease, and how one can avoid it, by maintaining an healthy lifestyle.

Know Your risk for Diabetes!

Some of the Risk Factors for Diabetes2.

1. Obesity or being overweight. Research has confirmed that this is one of the top reason for type 2 diabetes. As there is a rise in obesity among Indian children, this type is affecting more teenagers.

2. Sedentary lifestyle. The less active you are, the more chances you will for getting diabetes.

3. Family history. Someone close to you have diabetes, increses your chance to get diabetes.

4. Age. If you're over 45 and overweight or if you have symptoms of diabetes, talk to your doctor about a simple screening test.

The This test is not a diagnostic tool. It is designed for people without a current diagnosis of diabetes and is intended to highlight a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years.

The test is based on the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) developed and designed by Adj. Prof Jaana Lindstrom and Prof. Jaakko Tuomilehto from the National Institute for Health and Welfare, Helsinki, Finland.

To make the tool as easy to use as possible, they only considered health characteristics that people would know about themselves without needing a blood test or other medical evaluation—such as age, height and weight, but not including blood glucose or cholesterol levels.

A high score on the online risk test (five or higher) means an individual has a significant risk for having undiagnosed prediabetes or type 2 diabetes; however, only a blood test can determine a diagnosis.
